Certification Exam Information


Before You Start

Please read the following carefully. If you have any questions, please look in the FAQ or contact us with your questions.

Exam Prerequisites

Before taking the exam, you’ll need to download and install the Proctorio browser plug-in. You’ll need to use the Chrome browser and install the plug-in, please follow the instructions here. 

You’ll also need some form of photo ID to prove who you are. Any official photo id with your name and a photo of you will suffice e.g. a passport, student id, or identity card.

All of the questions come from the learning material provided in the course. If you have done the course, please review the presentations and other material before taking the exam.

Exam Conditions

The exam is a close book exam, in which you will have 90 minutes to answer 50 multiple-choice questions. A closed book exam means you cannot look at any other material while you are taking the exam.

During the exam, you can not:

  • Look up answers on the internet in another browser or browser tab
  • Refer to written notes or other material
  • Phone or talk to a friend for answers
  • Record or copy the exam questions in any way

Try to take the exam in a quiet place, where you’ll not be disturbed for the duration of the exam. There should be no other people in the room with you. If this is not possible then please contact us for alternative arrangements.

At the start of the exam, you will be asked to show your photo identification, this will be reviewed to make sure it matches who you are.

During the exam, a recording of your webcam and your desktop will be taken and any suspicious activity will be flagged by the proctoring system.

These video recordings of you and your desktop will be deleted after they have been reviewed by an assessor at OpenSI. They will be held for a maximum of 30 days.

Don’t Panic

If something goes wrong while you are taking the exam and you are unable to complete it, don’t worry. Contact us, and you will be able to take the exam again for free, or we will make alternative arrangements for you. 

Certification

The certification is issued by OpenSI a few days after you have taken the exam and can be shared on Linkedin and verified by employers.

FAQ

How much does the exam cost?
A donation to the Apache Software Foundation is required to take the exam. The donation can be any amount and simply requires a proof of receipt to take the certification exam.

How do I donate to the ASF?
Donations can be made here or here and a proof of receipt is required. Please email all receipts to certification@opensi.net. Once received your receipt will be deleted and no personal information other than you name and email address will be kept.

Do I need to take an OpenSI course to take the certification exam?
No. You do not have to complete an OpenSI course to sit this exam. Exams can be taken separately.

How long do I have to complete the exam?
90 minutes.

What format is the exam?
The exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions.

What do I need to take the exam?
A computer with a good internet connection, photo identification, and a quiet place, with no distractions or other people around to take the exam.

How many questions do I need to get right in order to be awarded a certificate?
The pass mark will change over time but will be somewhere between 60% and 80%.

How long after the exam will I need to wait before I get my certificate?
Within a few business days of you taking the exam.

If I don’t pass the exam can I take the exam again?
Yes, you can take the exam again for free. Note that the questions may not be the same when you take the exam again.

Do I need to use the Proctorio plug-in?
Yes, however, if for some reason you can’t please get in touch and we’ll make alternative arrangements.

How long are the webcam and desktop recordings kept?
They are deleted once your exam results are verified and are kept for a maximum of 30 days.

Who has access to the webcam and desktop recordings?
Only selected OpenSI staff are authorised to verify exam results.
