OpenSI is a collaboration between NetApp, University of Canberra and the ACT Government.  The collaboration is boosting open source research, innovation and building capability and advancing our community and knowledge. It’s a platform for applied research, idea exchange, and global collaboration. This partnership bridges academia and industry, enhancing open source capabilities to solve real-world problems.

Part of our mission here is to fostering future open source technologists and advocates, helping them develop their professional aptitude and skills and to apply them to real-world experiences.

One of our first interns, Daniil Golikov, has been doing an outstanding job and applied himself to our inaugural research & development project and is working closely with our team of engineers and open source specialists located within the NetApp R&D team.

Below are some questions we have asked Daniil and the responses are in his own words.

QUESTIONS

What are you studying at university?

I am finishing my Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, where I focus heavily on programming, software development methodologies, and application design.

How did you come across this internship opportunity and what made you choose the OpenSI program?

I found out about the OpenSI internship through my university’s career services. My choice was driven by the program’s emphasis on data management and real-world applications in software development and its collaboration with industry leaders like NetApp.

What are you hoping to learn during your internship?

During my internship, I aim to deepen my understanding and practical skills in advanced programming, software development processes, and the application of these skills in real-world scenarios. I’m particularly excited about enhancing my ability to develop software that solves practical, real-world problems.

Can you share how this internship is contributing to your own personal advancement?

This internship has been instrumental in my personal and professional growth. Working on the FFT Compression Project has allowed me to apply my programming knowledge in a practical setting, while also improving my problem-solving skills and understanding the nuances of software development in a professional environment.

What project have you been working on?

I’ve been involved in the FFT Compression Project, which aims to optimize storage costs by compressing operational data across network nodes. This project has provided me with an invaluable opportunity to apply and refine my programming skills, particularly in Rust, to explore innovative approaches to software development and to engage in innovative data compression techniques.

What’s the most surprising thing so far about working with the NetApp team?

The most surprising and rewarding aspect has been the level of collaboration and the diversity of technical expertise within the NetApp team. The project’s success is a clear result of the effective combination of various skills and innovative thinking.

What advice/tips do you have for current students looking to apply for an OpenSI internship?

Be proactive in learning and adapting to new technologies and software development techniques. Emphasize your interest in applying theoretical knowledge to real-world problems and be prepared to work collaboratively in a dynamic environment.

Anything else that you would like to add?

This internship has reinforced my passion for software engineering. It’s been an incredible journey to contribute to a meaningful project that not only aligns with NetApp’s mission but also pushes the boundaries of technological innovation through practical applications.
